Mike Sullivan joined the Department of Public Safety as a trooper cadet in 1966. Two years later he was promoted to trooper and assigned to the Investigatvie and Identification Division (now ABI), in Montgomery. In 1971, Sullivan was transferred to the Highway Patrol Division, Dothan Post, and then to Executive Security in 1977, where he served in the Criminal Investigation Unit. In 1983, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Polygraph Section of ABI. He served in that capacity until 1988, when he was promoted to captain and assumed command of the Auto Theft Unit. In 1994, Sullivan was promoted to major as chief of the Driver License Division, where he served until his transfer to the ABI Division the following year. In 1996, Sullivan was named assistant director of Public Safety under Governor Fob James. He served in that capacity until January 1999, when Governor Don Siegelman name him acting director of the department. Sullivan retired in January 2000.
A native of Montgomery, Sullivan received his bachelors degree in law enforcement and masters degree in criminal justice from Auburn University at Montgomery. He is a 1978 graduate of the FBI National Academy.
