Lieutenant Colonel John Fisher Jr. assumed the role of assistant director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety in March 2003, following his appointment by Governor Bob Riley. Lietenant Colonel John Fisher retired in September 2003.

A veteran law enforcement officer, Fisher served for 30 years with the Birmingham Police Department before his retirement in 2000, as deputy chief in charge of Criminal Investigations. During his service with that agency, he advanced through every rank and worked in every operational and organizational component of the department, occupying supervisory positions for 22 years and serving the last 14 years at the executive level. His accomplishments include pioneering a crime management process titled Trends and Tactics.

Fisher earned a bachelor of arts degree in social science from Miles College and is a graduate of Holy Family High School in Birmingham. He and his wife have two grown children and two grandchildren.
